Anthropology department has been actively involved in academic as well as research in the field of physical and social-cultural anthropology. It came in to existence in July 1957 from its mother department viz. Anthropogeography. The world renowned Social Scientist and Anthropologists Prof. S. C. Dube was the founder HOD. The department is credited with numerous books and research papers in various reputed journals. The department has been actively involved in organizing various National, International conferences/symposium/seminars. Currently department has seven full time faculties having specialization in diverse fields of anthropology. The department has produced 71 PhDs till 2014 and many research scholars are pursuing their PhDs as per the new pattern of the UGC, involving one semester course work. Noteworthy research contributions have been made in the front of social-cultural anthropology, tribal health, dermatoglyphics, osteology, physiology, serology, and biochemical genetics. One distinguished feature of the department is conducting anthropological field visits in the post graduate curriculum.
The department has a series of achievements to its credit. The department was recognized as an ‘Advance Study Centre’ from University Grant Commission under the leadership of Prof. S.C. Dube. The internationally recognized, Prof. S. C. Dude was awarded with National fellowship from ICSSR and his successor Prof. S. Saraf was recipient of Emeritus Fellowship from UGC. Dr. K.K.N. Sharma and Dr. Ruma Purkait have been awarded with UGC research awards. During this time frame, the faculty members and scholars have published more than seventy books, approximately seven hundred research papers, carried out over twenty four projects and three patents. The department has organized more than two dozens national seminars/conferences and workshops.
Scope and Placement
There is immense scope for employment of the Post Graduate and Doctoral degree holders of Anthropology. Most of the pass-outs are employed in various institutions/ departments/ ministries viz. Anthropological Survey of India, Tribal Research Institutes, Department of Rural Development, UNICEF, UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), WHO, Museum of Man, IGRMS (Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sanghralya, Bhopal), Registrar General of India, CCMB (Centre of Cellular and Molecular Research Biology), Sports Authority of India, Forensic Science Laboratories, UPSC, PSC, Archaeological Survey of India, Planning Commission, National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) and, other NGOs.
The Department is equipped with several laboratories, an ethnographic museum and a lyceum. The Lyceum is a homage to its founder and named as ‘S.C. Dube Lyceum’. It has a good collection of books/ theses/ dissertations/ journals/ reprints etc. available for consultation and ready reference. Currently, the department has seven laboratories (General and Specialized) viz. Osteometric, Dermatoglyphics, Cytogenetics, Bio-chemical Genetics, Forensic anthropology, Physiology and Archaeology Lab. In addition, department has one well-equipped computer lab with high speed internet and Wi-Fi network.
