The Department of Psychology was established as a separate department on March 18, 1963 in headship of Prof. S. K. Saxena, then Head of the Philosophy Department. It was the first Psychology Department of undivided Madhya Pradesh. Since its inception, it provided facility for pursuing Under Graduate, Post Graduate and doctoral courses in Psychology.
Being the key constituent of School of Humanities & Social Sciences, the Department of Psychology has continuously been offering its noteworthy contributions in teaching, research and social extension services. Academicians of repute like Prof. S. K. Saxena, Ph. D. (London), Dr. Ray Choudhary, Ph. D. (London), Prof. M. C. Joshi, Ph. D. (B. H. U), Prof. H. S. Asthana, Prof. Jai Prakash, D. Phil. (University of Allahabad), Prof. I. S. Muhar, Prof. A. K. Purohit and Prof. Y. S. Vagarecha extended their valuable services to the Department. The department moved into its own Psychology Laboratory Building in 1979 (the Wundt’s Leipzig Laboratory Centenary). Prof. Udai Jain and Dr. B. B. Asthana also served the Department for shorter periods. Its present is no less bright and promising. With its multifaceted engagements, the department is fast moving to keep pace with the present challenges of the discipline.
In the formative years of the department research work in the area of social and clinical psychology was initiated by Prof. Jai Prakash.Prof. H. S. Asthana with his international training helped in establishing theLaboratory of Experimental Psychology. Prof. I. S. Muhar extended the works in the experimental psychology by establishing Laboratory of comparative psychology with the state of art animal Laboratory. In addition to the above mentioned areas, the teaching and research began in Psychopathology, clinical Psychology, community Psychology, child psychology and organizational and health psychology areas of psychology.
Prof. H. S. Asthana has been widely known for his outstanding contributions in the area of clinical psychology by using Rorschach Psycho-diagnostic Test. Prof. A. K. Purohit had received tarining in the area of signal detection theory in the Harvard University and completed Ph. D. using signal detection analysis. Prof. Jai Prakash got diploma in the area of behaviour modification by working with Lazarus, a famous international psychologist. Prof. Y. S. Vagrecha, a trained clinical Psychologist from Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi, contributed in the department by teaching, research and consultancy services in the area of mental health in the recent past.
By associating with the SAKSHAM Project (2009-2015), the department has created more than thirty Master trainers in the area of health counselling including HIV/AIDS. These counsellors include our P. G. Student, research scholars, teachers, medical practitioners and social workers associated with NGOs. These professionals were trained by expertise harness through Tata Institute of Social Sciences and college of Social Work Nirmala Niketan by involving experts from all over the country. The Department has been associated with extension services since long. The B. S. Centre of Neuropsychology and Counseling, established in 1981, has been providing counselling to the local community in a limited but a significant way by organizing monthly camps in the city as well as in the department. At present, we have two professors, one associate professor and two assistant professors.
