Department of Linguistics: An Overview
 
The Department of Linguistics was established in 1959 under the guidance and leadership of Prof. Babu Ram Saxena invited for the same by Pandit Dwarka Prasad Mishra, the then Vice Chancellor of this University. This University was the seventh University of India to establish the Department of Linguistics and to teach Linguistics at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Besides Prof. Babu Ram Saxena, the other founder faculty members of this department were Prof. Ramesh Chandra Mahrotra and Prof. Devi Shankar Dwivedi who joined the department as Lecturers. The Department of Linguistics, since its inception, has been headed by under the guidance of some eminent scholars like Dr. Babu Ram Saxena, Dr. Dhirendra Verma, Dr. Devi Shankar Dwivedi, Dr. Pawan Kumar Jain, Dr. Bhagirath Mishra, Dr. Bhagwandin Mishra, Dr. Kanti Kumar Jain, Dr. Radheyshyam Dubey, Dr. Badriprasad, Dr. Radhaballabh Tripathi, Dr. Kusum Bhuria,  Dr. Rajmati Diwakar and Dr. Usha Bhatnagar. Presently, Prof. Anand Prakash Tripathi (Head, Deptt. Of Hindi) is Head in-charge of the Department.
 
The Department has produced more than twenty five Ph.D. in various disciplines of Linguistics. Various research projects sanctioned by U.G.C. have also been completed in this Department. The Department has also been actively engaged in organizing seminars and conferences both at national and international levels.  
 
The Department is presently running courses in Linguistics both at U.G. and P.G. levels. In addition to this, Ph.D. programme with coursework is also offered and it further plans to offer M. Phil., Certificate and Post M.A. Diploma Courses in Linguistics in near future.
